Sylvester Stallone’s Italian Roots: A Documented Line from Gioia del Colle, Puglia

In 2023, Sylvester Stallone stood on the balcony of the town hall of Gioia del Colle, in the Puglian province of Bari, and held up an old iron key. “A hundred years ago my grandfather left this town, and this was the key to his barber shop,” he told the crowd below. “He had the courage to make that journey — and that is why I am here today, with my family.” The moment had the quality of the closing scene of a Rocky film. It was also, quite literally, true — and every link in it can be found in the Italian archives.

Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born on 6 July 1946 in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan, the son of Frank Stallone Sr. (Francesco Stallone) and Jacqueline “Jackie” Labofish. His father was a full-blooded Italian-American, born in Gioia del Colle on 12 September 1919; his mother was of French, Ukrainian and Ashkenazi descent.

Unlike so many Italian-American families, whose origins fade after a generation or two, Stallone’s paternal line can be followed backwards, generation by generation, through the civil and parish records of Puglia — back to the early nineteenth century and beyond. What follows is that paper trail.

The father: Frank Stallone Sr.

Frank Stallone Sr. was born in Gioia del Colle in 1919 and taken to the United States as a small child. In America he worked as a hairdresser and beautician — and played polo — but his roots, and both of his parents, were entirely Puglian.

The grandfather who kept the key

Sylvester’s paternal grandfather was Silvestro Stallone, a barber born in Gioia del Colle on 10 November 1883. In 1923 he and his wife, Pulcheria Nicastri, sailed for America aboard the SS Dante Alighieri. It was Silvestro’s barber-shop key that his grandson raised on the town-hall balcony a century later.

The Stallone line, generation by generation

Silvestro was the son of Domenico Stallone and Maria Giuditta Patarino, of Palo del Colle, a neighbouring town in the same province. Domenico was born on 12 July 1857; Maria Giuditta, daughter of Gaudenzio Patarino and Maria Masi, on 28 October 1861. They married on 7 April 1883.

Domenico’s own father was another Silvestro Stallone, born in Palo del Colle on 17 August 1815, who married Pasqua Guida. Husband and wife died within a fortnight of one another in the summer of 1865: Silvestro on 7 July, Pasqua just fifteen days later, on 22 July. The register records both losses on the same yellowed pages.

The Stallone line reaches back one further step, to Nicolò Stallone, husband of Anna Selvaggio, whose death is recorded in 1817.

The grandmother’s family: the Nicastri line

Sylvester’s paternal grandmother, Pulcheria Nicastri, was born in Gioia del Colle on 17 February 1890, the daughter of Francesco Nicastri and Nunziata Speranza, who had married there the year before.

Francesco Nicastri was born in Gioia del Colle on 7 December 1868, son of Nicola Nicastri and Pulcheria Colacicco. His wife, Nunziata Speranza, was born in the same town in 1873, daughter of Giuseppe Nicola Speranza and Maria Antonia Benedetto.

The Nicastri line, too, continues back into the early nineteenth century: to Nicola Nicastri, born in 1824 to Berardino Nicastri and Chiara Bellacicco, and to Pulcheria Colacicco, born in 1840 to Filippo Colacicco and Anna Surico.

Gioia del Colle

Gioia del Colle sits on the Murgia plateau of Puglia, in the province of Bari, and is known for its Norman-Swabian castle, one of the best preserved in southern Italy, enlarged by Frederick II in the thirteenth century. The surname Stallone is rare across Italy, concentrated precisely between Puglia and Basilicata. When the town made Sylvester and his brother Frank Jr. honorary citizens in 2023, the mayor presented them with a reconstruction of the family tree reaching back to grandfather Silvestro, who had left in 1923 aboard the Dante Alighieri.
